EPublication partnerships of EDI 2022 Cape Town conference

Associated with this conference are European Management Review; Equality, Diversity, Inclusion: An International Journal, and International Perspectives in Psychology: Research, Practice, Consultation edited by Ines Meyer. Outstanding, pre-selected papers for the conference will be submitted to these journals, which will then process them, according to their usual standards.

We are also pleased to advise stream organizers that two series of books are also associated with the conference, “International Perspectives on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion” (an ongoing book series from Emerald), edited by Mustafa Özbilgin and Jean-François Chanlat, and “Diversity and Inclusion Research” (a new book series from Springer), edited by Thomas Köllen. Relevant stream proposals will be eligible for these book series, subject to acceptance by the respective editors.

Deadlines for paper submissions

Submissions to the conference (i.e. to the streams) can be in the form of long abstracts (up to 1500 words), developmental papers (3000-5000 words, including references) or full papers (no length restrictions) by the deadline of 14 April 2022.

All submissions will be subjected to peer review, organized by stream chairs.

The authors will be informed about the acceptance or rejection of their submission by 30 April 2022.

Conference organisers and stream chairs have no influence on the review process of best papers submitted to partner journals. Publication decisions are made solely by the chief editor of the relevant journal and follow the journal’s review guidelines.

Conference Theme: Disruption

Collins’ dictionary defines disruption as an action through which “an event, system, or process is prevented from continuing or operating in a normal way”. It reflects the negative connotation often associated with the term: Disruption upsets the status quo, it creates ‘abnormality’ and tends to be highly uncomfortable for all involved. Yet, disruptions have also created substantial progress in creating greater inclusion and equality. Over the course of the 21st century, for example, disruption has led to a questioning of who defines what is ‘normal’ culminating in redefinitions of what is seen as normal. Disruptive practices, such as the #BlackLivesMatter movement or Fridays for Future, have made it less possible to ignore topics important to ‘disruptors’. They have highlighted exclusionary practices towards those who have historically been on the margins, not just in relation to race or ethnicity, but also, for example, by redefining gender from categorical to fluid. In a different way, the Covid-19 pandemic has created the most widespread and fundamental disruption in this century yet, leading to substantial and rapid changes in almost all aspects of life for people across the world. Many workplace norms shifted radically overnight. The rise in remote working arrangements means that many have been able to save on their commute for work purposes, for example, while it has also blurred further boundaries between life domains. In the EDI 2022 conference, we seek to surface different forms of disruptions and their impact on work, employment and management practices. We want to shed light on both, what is gained and what is lost through different forms of disruption – as well as how to leverage opportunities which disruptions present.

Possible streams and workshop proposals could include but are not limited to:

- The role of disruption in the formal and informal work sector

- Disruption and mental health

- Opportunities and challenges of technological disruptions for equality, diversity and inclusion

- How to make use of disruptive practices for greater equality, diversity and inclusion

- Disruption: temporary or permanent changes?

We are inviting conference streams which consider aspects of disruption related to the above and beyond.

The 15th International Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Conference (EDI) will take place from 22-24 July 2022 in Cape Town, South Africa. We are planning for a hybrid format, with attendees being able to attend in person or online.

Registration closes on Thursday, 30 June 2022.

Given the ever changing nature of travel, it may well be that restrictions will be eased further, rather than tightened. That said, the situation in July is, as you will understand, not entirely predictable.

For those of you who are coming to Cape Town, we strongly recommend that you book a hotel through a service that allows you to cancel the room up to one week before the conference (e.g. booking.com).

Please check the following link regularly for Covid-19 regulations and travel restrictions that may apply to you when entering South Africa:

For questions regarding your payments and registration please contact: enquiries@edi-conference.org

For other questions please contact: edi2022@uct.ac.za

Please note the programme will be released the first week of July. While the Covid-19 pandemic can create a lot of uncertainty, we are confident we will be able to maintain the dinner and social events that are synonymous with this event. We look forward to seeing you all in Cape Town!

Best
